Hojicha Tea Latte Recipe
I actually love to drink both coffee and tea, but unfortunately, my body doesn’t deal well with coffee at all. That’s why I’ve been spicing up my tea game to compensate! I especially love Japanese green teas, such as matcha, sencha, and hojicha and I would like to share this hojicha latte recipe with you guys.
HΕjicha, or also houjicha, is a Japanese green tea that – unlike many other steamed teas – is roasted in a porcelain pot over charcoal at a high temperature. The roasting process makes the hojicha sweeter in taste but also lowers its caffeine content. So it’s perfect for someone who can’t handle caffeine, like me!
Serves: 1 Β |Β Prep Time: 3 minsΒ |Β Cook Time: 2 minsΒ | Total: 5 mins
Cooking & Kitchen Supplies: 200ml tea glass |Β milk frother (or jar/ shaker)Β |Β small saucepan
Ingredients
- 2g hojicha tea leaves or 1 single serving hojicha tea bag
- 90ml whole milk
- 90ml water
- 1 tbsp maple syrup
I personally used hojicha tea from the Ujinotsuyu brand, which I got at an Asian supermarket in the Netherlands. It has single serving tea bags, but the tea leaves are actually visible.
There’s also lots of instant hojicha latte available, but I’d rather be able to add my own sweetener to be honest. Another “downside” to the instant lattes is that they’re so easy to make that I finish the whole box in just a couple of days. And they’re kind of expensive. So that’s why I started making my own hojicha lattes!
How to make your own Hojicha Tea Latte
- Boil water for your tea.
- In the meantime, heat up your milk in a small saucepan. It’s only a little, so it shouldn’t take long.
- Let the tea steep in the hot water for a minute, or according to the instructions on your package.
- Prepare a glass for your latte and add 1 tbsp of maple syrup to it.
- When the tea is done seeping, pour it into the glass, on top of the maple syrup.
- Froth the top of the hot milk, and pour it into the glass with the tea. If the foam doesn’t come out, scoop it onto the tea with a spoon.
- Your latte is ready, enjoy!
